Presentation

Your holiday along the Eurovelo 1 begins at the very heart of the Breton salterns of the Vendée between sea and mainland. The scenery is astonishing, with water meadows and polders cut through by canals and drained by salt channels.
Then it's on to the island of Noirmoutier, and the deepening impression of being in another world as you penetrate further into the isle. Then there are beaches, salterns, visits to little fishing ports, and forward to the third part of the programme as you set foot on the Ile d'Yeu with its wild coastline, fine sandy beaches little white cottages and the sea air to inhale, deeply. You could imagine that you were out to sea!

You'll love

  • the traffic-free itineraries through the salt flats
  • cycling across the Gois (tidal causeway) to get to Noirmoutier
  • the fine sands of the Isle of Yeu
  • trying the seafood
  • a variety of accommodation

Program : The Vendee coastal isles for families

  • D1 Arrival in Noirmoutier en l'Île

Arrival in Noirmoutier en l'Île in the late afternoon.

The island of Noirmoutier is nicknamed the "island of mimosas" for its mild climate which allows mimosas to grow and bloom in winter. The dominant landscapes are salt marshes, dunes and holm oak forests.
Welcome and installation in the rooms.

Dinner where you will at Noirmoutier and night in 3 star hotel.

  • D2 Ride around Noirmoutier

    19km stage. About 2hrs.
The history of Noirmoutier is reminiscent of the waters all around it: wild and agitated. Pillage, battles, invasions and combats of every type have marked the history of this indomitable territory. During your ride you'll see both salt and wild marshes within which numerous species of birds make their nests. Salt has been gathered in Noirmoutier since prehistoric times. From the fifth century, Benedictine monks began to organise the wet marshland into exploitable salt flats through a huge programme of systematic drainage. In a good year, salt production today is around 1500 tons.

Dinner where you will at Noirmoutier and night in 3 star hotel.

  • D3 Bike ride from Noirmoutier to Beauvoir sur Mer

    27 km stage - between 3hrs.

This stage will take you to the mainland via the Gois passage, a submersible roadway, a real curiosity of the Vendée landscape, which can only be used at low tide.

Dinner and night in a guest house.

  • D4 Bike ride round Beauvoir sur Mer

    29km stage, around 3hrs30mins.

Cycling is perfectly adapted to exploring the Vendée wetlands.  You meander through the marshy meadows, crossing over narrow water channels and chancing upon a multitude of migratory or native birds, such as waders. Seafront dykes link the charming small ports. On the menu for those who enjoy them, oysters and shellfish. And doesn't everyone just love the bracing sea air?

Dinner and night in a guest house.

  • D5 Bike ride on the western side of the Ile d'Yeu (say "ealed-yuh")

Ride in the western part of the Ile d'Yeu:  kms (3hrs).
You'll soon leave the bustle of the port behind you and come to the scenic track which follows the wild coastline. A succession of beaches set in a craggy coast. And a trip back in time with dolmens, menhirs and old castles.

Dinner where you will at Port-Joinville followed by night at a 2 star hotel (or guest house).

  • D6 Ride on the eastern side of the Island of Yeu

    26 km stage. Around 3hrs.
The first part of the route is typified by beaches and gentle coastal scenery. At the tip of the island, called "les corbeaux" (the crows), it's the wild and austere atmosphere of the island of Yeu that dominates. The route back through the interior of the island, which passes between the neat white houses of the village of St Sauveur, is sheer escapism.

Dinner where you will at Port-Joinville followed by night at a 2 star hotel (or guest house).

  • D7 Crossing from Ile d'Yeu to Fromentine

After breakfast, you will take the boat back to the mainland.

This is the end of your trip and the start of a new adventure!
